The Radio Television Digital News Association has honored Michigan Radio with a RTDNA/UNITY Award for its recent “Infant Mortality in Michigan” documentary. Michigan Radio received the award in the large market radio category.

Michigan Radio has won fourteen awards from the Michigan Associated Press for news coverage, including the Overall Excellence Award for large market radio. The large market radio category includes both public and commercial radio stations in Michigan. In addition to the Overall Excellence Award, the station was recognized with six first-place awards and seven second-place awards. Michigan Radio received the following awards:

The Moth has announced the lineup of storytellers for its Moth Mainstage show in Kalamazoo on May 22. “Between Worlds: The Moth in Kalamazoo” will feature a host and five storytellers, each of whom will tell a ten minute story live without notes.

Snap Judgment tells intriguing stories about extraordinary and defining events in people’s lives. The program’s raw, intimate, and musical brand of storytelling dares listeners to see a sliver of the world through another’s eye. Host Glynn Washington takes listeners on a narrative journey that highlights people from across the globe who have put everything on the line. It’s storytelling… with a beat. The program airs on Michigan Radio, Saturdays at 2 p.m.

Michigan Radio received sixteen awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters for achievement in broadcasting in 2012. The awards were announced Wednesday evening at the MAB’s annual Great Lakes Broadcasting Conference in Lansing. The station’s awards include recognition as Public Radio Station of the Year-Group 2, an award Michigan Radio has won every year for the past decade.

Michigan Radio will present a live performance of The Moth Mainstage in Kalamazoo on Wednesday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. After sold out performances in Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor last year, The Moth Mainstage will return to Michigan with a line-up of writers, performers, and other unique national and Michigan storytellers, each with a ten-minute story to tell live without notes. The theme for this year’s Moth Mainstage show will be “Between Worlds.”

Michigan Radio launches multi-year project to examine economic future of Michigan’s children

Michigan Radio has been awarded a major three-year grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to report on the many issues related to childhood poverty. The $995,000 grant, the largest in the station’s history, will allow Michigan Radio to move beyond traditional radio reporting to reach a wide variety of audiences about the plight facing Michigan’s most vulnerable children.

Talking emergency managers and having some ale in Flint

A full house turned out to hear Michigan Radio’s political analyst Jack Lessenberry lead a discussion on the state’s emergency manager law last night.

The event was part of the station’s Issues & Ale series, and was held at Blackstone’s Pub & Grill in downtown Flint.

Panelists included:

Fred Leeb, former Emergency Financial Manager for the city of Pontiac,
Dr. Eric Scorsone, Co-Director of the State & Local Government Program at Michigan State University,
and Brandon A. Jessup, Chairman and CEO of Michigan Forward

The panelists fielded questions from both Lessenberry and the audience on a variety of subjects related to Public Act 4, including the impact of state revenue sharing cuts, the constitutionality of state appointed emergency managers, and alternatives for cities in financial crisis.

We also surveyed the audience to get their opinion on the Emergency Manager law.

Of those responding,

47% opposed the law, 23% were in favor, and 30% were undecided.
Of those opposed to the law, 36% felt it was unconstitutional, 26% objected because it gives emergency managers too much power, 18% opposed because emergency managers can modify/terminate contracts, and 13% because it strips local elected officials of their authority.

The event took place only hours after the Michigan Court of Appeals put a stay on a lower court ruling and reinstated Michael Brown as Flint’s emergency manager.

Issues and Ale is an event series co-sponsored by Michigan Radio and the Center for Michigan designed to engage people in conversations about important issues facing Michigan... in an informal atmosphere.

Michigan Radio's investigative reporter, Lester Graham, has been selected as a winner of the 2012 State Bar of Michigan Wade H. McCree Award for the Advancement of Justice. Graham was recognized for his five-part series on Michigan’s no-fault insurance law, which aired in October and November, 2011.

Michigan Radio establishes Mid-Michigan news bureau

As part of the station’s ongoing efforts to cover news across the state, Michigan Radio has established a new mid-Michigan news bureau. Based in Jackson, Reporter Steve Carmody will be covering stories in that city, as well as Lansing, Battle Creek and other mid-Michigan communities.

New ATC and Weekend Edition Sunday hosts

Last summer, Audie Cornish took over as the new host of Weekend Edition Sunday, following Liane Hansen’s retirement. This January, Audie is making another change as she takes on a one-year assignment as co-host of All Things Considered. This change follows Michele Norris’ decision to step away from that post until after the 2012 presidential campaign because her husband has taken a senior position with President Obama's re-election effort.

NPR recently launched the Backseat Book Club, which encourages young readers to read a selected book and send in questions for the author to answer on-air.

In December, we’re adding a new twist. Three copies of the Backseat Book Club selection, Breadcrumbs by Anne Ursu, have been hidden in Michigan Radio’s listening area. If listeners can track down the book based on our clues and take a photo of themselves with it, their treasure hunt story may be featured on the Backseat Book Club webpage. Plus, the first person to find the book wins the book and other prizes!
