It’s the <a href="http://environmentreport.org/enbridge_oil_spill.php">same pipeline that broke</a> in Marshall two years ago.&nbsp; The new pipeline will allow Enbridge to <a href="http://environmentreport.org/show.php?showID=652">double the amount of oil</a> they can transport to refineries in Detroit, Toledo and Sarnia, Ontario.</p><p>To build the pipeline, the company says it needs additional easement next to the current 60 foot easement that runs through many people’s backyards.&nbsp;</p><p>Enbridge says many people who own land along the pipeline route have signed contracts with the company.&nbsp; But Enbridge is taking people who refuse to sign contracts to court.</p><p>In a courthouse in Howell yesterday, a judge heard arguments against more than a dozen landowners. (Some of the cases were settled yesterday afternoon, involving the Munsell farming family. The settlement requires Enbridge to stay within the existing 60 foot easement on the Munsell's property, but does allow Enbridge to temporarily use additional land as workspace for the new pipeline.)</p><p>Connie Watson and her husband Tom are among the defendants.&nbsp;</p><p>"Enbridge has taken us to condemnation. The Board of State Canvassers deadlocked on whether the proposals' wording met the requirements in the state constitution. "The proposals would guarantee collective bargaining rights in the state constitution, allow more casinos in Michigan, require super-majorities before the Legislature can increase taxes, and demand voter approval before the state could build a new international bridge to Canada. Some of the campaigns – the ones blocked from the ballot – want to see some changes in how elections decisions are made. They say a state elections board should not make determinations on whether proposals meet the requirements of the Michigan Constitution -- that’s up to the courts," Rick Pluta reports</p><p><strong>Drought and heat makes Michigan a natural disaster area</strong></p><p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture has declared the entire state of Michigan a natural disaster area because of the continuing drought and heat. "Trunkline Gas Company is asking regulators for permission to abandon some 770 miles of natural gas pipeline. Consumers Energy spokesman Dan Bishop says the utility gets 60% of its natural gas supply from Trunkline. Governor Snyder, The Michigan Public Service Commission and a coalition of businesses are also asking the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to deny Trunkline's request," Rina Miller reports. The pipeline was built in 1969.</p><p>Now company officials want to replace 200 miles of the oil pipeline in Michigan.</p><p>The &quot;6B&quot; pipeline broke open near Marshall, Michigan in 2010 and spilled more that 840,000 gallons of thick tar sands oil into Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River. There are <a href="http://environmentreport.org/show.php?showID=630">still pockets of thick oil at the bottom of the Kalamazoo River</a>.</p><p>The 6B pipeline has been operating at reduced capacity since the spill.</p><p>Crystal Garcia of the <a href="http://www.thetimesherald.com/article/20120510/NEWS01/305100001/Enbridge-Inc-proposes-new-oil-pipeline?odyssey=mod|newswell|text|FRONTPAGE|s&amp;nclick_check=1">Times Herald of Port Huron</a> reported on Enbridge&#39;s plan today.</p><p>She writes the existing pipeline is pumping around &quot;243,000 barrels of oil a day with the pressure restrictions.&quot; A company spokesman, Joe Martucci, said the new pipeline would produce about 500,000 barrels of oil a day.</p><p>If plans are approved, Garcia reports the existing pipeline will be taken offline and remain in place, and the new pipeline will be built about 25 feet from the existing line.</p><blockquote><p>Replacing the pipeline will be done in two phases, Martucci said.</p><p>Part of the first phase &mdash; which includes two five-mile segments east of pumping stations near Griffith and LaPorte, Ind. and three five-mile segments east of Niles, Mendon and Marshall &mdash; already has been approved. The other part of the first phase &mdash; a 50-mile segment between Stockbridge and Ortonville &mdash; is near approval. Consumers Energy wants to have fifty-six turbines built and running before the end of next year. But some residents say in its rush to get going Consumers and the County are downplaying a serious threat to public safety.</p><p>Natural gas pipelines run through the site of Consumers Energy&rsquo;s wind park south of Ludington.</p><p>A group of residents says at least half a dozen of the windmills are within falling distance of a gas line. And they say if a turbine falls it could cause a pipeline to break with the risk of an explosion. Still no word on how much fuel leaked from the storage tank.</p><p>From the Associated Press:</p><blockquote><p>Officials say they&#39;ve stopped a gasoline leak in Michigan and confirmed the source as a storage tank in the area.</p><p>Ingham County emergency officials said in a statement Monday that the tank and a related filling system in White Oak Township, about 55 miles west of Detroit, are owned by Marathon Pipe Line LLC.</p><p>A message seeking comment was left Monday by The Associated Press at Marathon&#39;s offices.</p><p>Wolverine Pipe Line Co., which also owns some tanks at the same storage site, has been working with the county on response to the leak since it was reported Wednesday.</p><p>The county says Marathon will take over work dealing with the leak from Wolverine. The amount of the spill remains unknown. There&#39;s no evidence of health hazards in the area.</p></blockquote><p><strong><span style="font-weight: bold;">9:07 a.m.</span></strong></p><p><span style="font-weight: bold;">Authorities say they&#39;ve found the source of the gasoline leak in </span>Ingham County.</p><p><span style="font-weight: bold;">From the Associated Press:</span></p><blockquote><p>Michigan authorities say they&#39;ve traced a gasoline leak to the area of a storage tank holding 14,700 barrels of fuel. Ingham County Emergency officials said in a statement Sunday that they&#39;ve found higher levels of spilled gasoline as their monitoring equipment approaches the Wolverine Pipeline Co. facility.</p><p>The large gasoline storage tank site is in White Oak Township, about 55 miles west of Detroit.</p><p>Some of the gas flowed about a mile down an open drain by the time a farmer reported the leak Wednesday.</p><p>The county says the suspected source of the leak is a tank that can hold up to 180,000 barrels of fuel.
