They came out with some new ideas and announced a package of things and innovative reforms they are for, rather than against.

The subject was mainly women’s health care, and for once, the party seems united around a well-thought out package of bills. Tim Griemel, who is still finding his voice as House Minority Leader, told a press conference “when a woman doesn’t get the health care she needs when she is pregnant, it isn’t just her own health that’s at stake. When a woman can’t get the care she needs after a violent attack, everyone who loves and supports her suffers along with her.”

Tue, 14 May 2013 12:53:54 +0000 Jack Lessenberry 12553 at http://michiganradio.org Commentary: Women's health and the Democrats Stateside: How to resist Netflix and get outside this winter http://michiganradio.org/post/stateside-how-resist-netflix-and-get-outside-winter
Frida Waara is an instructor in the upcoming Becoming an Outdoors Woman event this weekend in the Upper Peninsula's Big Bay, sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources.

The event will help women - even the most devoted Netflixers - develop skills that encourage and maintain an active lifestyle during a Michigan winter.

So, how does Waara get women to be active outdoors when the weather drops below zero?

Michigan Radio's Cynthia Canty spoke with Waara about the program and the importance for women to be active year round.

Thu, 21 Feb 2013 22:07:55 +0000 Stateside Staff 11375 at http://michiganradio.org Stateside: How to resist Netflix and get outside this winter State lawmakers halt fetal tax exemption bills http://michiganradio.org/post/state-lawmakers-halt-fetal-tax-exemption-bills
It appears legislation to allow people to claim a fetus as a dependent on their state taxes has stalled.

Plans to vote on the bills were scrapped, and they were removed from Monday’s state House Tax Policy Committee agenda.

Opponents of the measures called them a backhanded attack on access to abortions.

Committee Chairman Jud Gilbert said the issue has become too contentious.
Mon, 26 Nov 2012 22:41:25 +0000 Jake Neher 10066 at http://michiganradio.org State lawmakers halt fetal tax exemption bills Michigan considers tax breaks for women with 12 week old fetuses http://michiganradio.org/post/michigan-considers-tax-breaks-women-12-week-old-fetuses

Some Michigan legislators are working to give pregnant women a tax break for their fetuses.

The plan is to allow a woman to claim a 12-week-old fetus as a dependent on their state income tax return.

From House Bills 5684 & 5685:
Wed, 21 Nov 2012 17:07:38 +0000 Mark Brush 10018 at http://michiganradio.org Michigan considers tax breaks for women with 12 week old fetuses Health and safety concerns surround Glittersniffer Cosmetics http://michiganradio.org/post/health-and-safety-concerns-surround-glittersniffer-cosmetics
Glittersniffer Cosmetics is the brainchild of Lela Warren who lives in Dearborn Heights, Mich.

Warren sells brightly colored pigments called "giraffes in love" and "French kiss snow cone," which she markets as eye makeup.
