Detroit mayor to reveal re-election plans at noon event

DETROIT (AP) - Dave Bing has scheduled an announcement on his political future Tuesday, the deadline to file for a second 4-year term as Detroit's mayor.

Four p.m. Tuesday is the filing deadline.

Bing spokesman Bob Warfield said in an email Monday night that Bing would "make a major announcement about his political future" at noon Tuesday at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

The 69-year-old professional basketball Hall-of-Famer and ex-steel supply company owner was elected in 2009. He inherited a budget deficit of more than $300 million.

Lansing's mayor wants a third term

Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero says he wants four more years in office. He formally announced his campaign today.

“I’m telling you folks … Lansing is on the verge,” the partisan crowd groaned, and then laughed, as Virg Bernero joked at his campaign kickoff.

Ananich wins 27th state senate seat

Genesee County voters choose a familiar face to serve them in the state senate.

Tuesday, voters elected Democrat Jim Ananich in a special election to fill the vacant 27th district seat.

State Representative Jim Ananich was expected to win in the Democratic leaning 27th state senate district.

He defeated Republican Robert Daunt, the same man he defeated in last year’s State House race to represent Flint in Lansing.

Ananich picked up 75% of the vote. Daunt received more than 20% of the votes cast.

Liberatrian Robert Nicholls and Green Party candidate Bobby Jones split the rest.

Ananich replaces former state senator John Gleason, who stepped down after winning the Genesee County clerk’s election last fall.

Ananich will finish out Gleason’s unexpired term, which ends in 2014.

Michigan voters go to the polls on Tuesday.

School bond issues dominate the ballot in most of Michigan.

For example, Kalamazoo voters are being asked to decide on a $62 million bond request. If voters give their OK, the district would spend most of the money on maintaining city school buildings.

There are a few elected offices on the ballot of note.

In Genesee County, voters are picking a new state senator. Former senator John Gleason stepped down after winning the Genesee County clerk’s election last fall.

Tuesday primary begins the process of filling an empty state senate seat

Tomorrow, primary voters in Genesee County will narrow down the field of candidates to fill an open state senate seat.

There are seven candidates on the 27th state senate district primary ballot, though one has dropped out of the race.

On the Democratic side, State representatives Woodrow Stanley and Jim Ananich are facing off against Genesee County Commissioner Ted Henry and GM auto worker Chris Del Morone.

At a recent public forum, Stanley echoed the comments of his fellow Democratic candidates in hoping for a change at the state capitol.

New law requires Michigan voters to affirm US citizenship

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Voters must declare they are qualified to vote before getting a ballot under a bill signed into law by Gov. Rick Snyder.

The Republican governor signed legislation Friday containing that requirement and other election law changes.

Representatives for Snyder and Secretary of State Ruth Johnson say the leaders worked out concerns that led to his veto of similar legislation this summer. The new law doesn't include a citizen check-off box on ballot applications, which had been barred by a federal judge in the November election.

State Rep. Howze plans run for Detroit mayor

DETROIT (AP) - State Rep. Lisa L. Howze plans to run for Detroit mayor in 2013.

The Democrat announced Friday that she wouldn't seek reelection to her House seat this year and instead would run for mayor of Michigan's largest city.

Howze says her experience as a certified public accountant and finance professional would be key for the financially struggling city. She says her legislative experience in Lansing would be pivotal in gaining support that the city needs from the state.

The office of Detroit Mayor Dave Bing had no comment Friday on the announcement.
