2018 Principal of the Year weighs in on safety, technology, and future of education

Thomas Gould
Howell High School has a population of nearly 2,500 students.

Howell High School's Jason Schrock is Michigan's Principal of the Year for 2018.

In 2000, Schrock joined Howell High School as a math teacher. After seven years, he became assistant principal, and for the last six years has been full on principal.

Leading by example and wanting to create a positive school climate he says, "The more I’ve read and learned and watched other leaders from across the state, in and out of education, I know that the direction and the culture of the organization -- the tone is set by the leader."

When it comes to school safety, Schrock says, "We do our absolute best with our resources and our eyes on our students and the building, but honestly the best approach and the one that we’ve taken is to have the strongest relationship with our students as possible."

The Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals granted the award in April. Schrock is a nominee for National Principal of the Year. The winner will be announced in October.

Listen to the full interview above to hear Principal Schrock talk about the school's Early College Program, school safety and the impact of technology and social media on the students. Plus, he talks about the idea behind Innovation Academy, the non-traditional high school that will open this fall.
