Over 70,000 people in Michigan served in the U.S. armed services during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
Beginning Monday, July 6, Michigan Radio’s Beyond the Battlefield project will take a look at how those post-9/11 vets are faring. Through news features, interviews, and online video profiles, Michigan Radio will explore issues like employment, entrepreneurship, and reintegration into civilian life.
The series will also look at how Michiganders think the state and federal governments are doing addressing veteran care, as well as the particular struggles female veterans encounter when returning home.
Reports in the series, “Beyond the Battlefield,” will air July 6-10, 2015, on Michigan Radio during Morning Edition (Monday-Friday, 5:00-9:00 a.m.), All Things Considered (Monday-Friday, 4:00-6:30 p.m.), and during Michigan Radio’s daily talk show, Stateside with Cynthia Canty (Monday-Thursday, 3:00-4:00 p.m., 10:00 p.m. repeat). Additionally, Michigan Radio’s website www.michiganradio.org, will feature companion video conversations with vets about veterans’ services.
Michigan Radio will also be hosting a live Issues & Ale discussion on the topic on Tuesday, July 7, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Grand River Brewery in Jackson. News Director Vincent Duffy will moderate this discussion, which is free and open to the public. Veterans or those with veterans in their family are encouraged to attend and share their comments and questions.
