The Michigan Board of State Canvassers has approved two measures for the November ballot, and deadlocked on a third.
Voters this fall will be able to decide if Michigan should amend the Constitution to require utilities to generate 25 percent of their power from renewable resources by 2025, and whether or not the Constitution should be amended to allow home healthcare workers to unionize.
But the Board of State Canvassers deadlocked along party lines on whether to allow a proposal that would put the right to collectively bargain in the state Constitution. The Boards two Democrats voted to put that measure on the ballot, but the two Republicans voted no.
Opponents of that proposal say there isn’t any way to meet the 100-word limit for the ballot language because the measure has such wide-ranging consequences. It will be up to the courts to decide.
The Board did not vote on a fourth proposal that would have allowed eight new casinos in Michigan because the state Court of Appeals ruled yesterday that the language of the measure was unconstitutional.
