Michigan was hit hard by the fungal meningitis outbreak, which stemmed from tainted steroids from the New England Compounding Center. According to the Center for Disease Control, 264 cases have been reported in the state – more than 100 more than any other state in the nation.
Victims and their families are urged to file claims for possible compensation through a $100 million victim compensation fund created by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Massachusetts; however, time is running short.
Claims must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15, in order to be considered for compensation.
In a press release, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette reminded families of the deadline.
“Victims and families affected by this fungal meningitis tragedy have already endured significant hardship. No amount of money could undo the damage or bring a loved one back, but this fund may be an option to help families rebuild. I encourage victims and families to consult a private attorney to determine whether filing a claim is appropriate for their situation.”
