In Detroit’s North End neighborhood, residents want a stronger voice

Reverend Joan Ross joined Cynthia Canty in Detroit for today's Stateside.

The story of post-bankruptcy Detroit has largely been dominated by what's happening in downtown, Midtown and Corktown.

Businessman Dan Gilbert continues to reinvent and reshape downtown by buying buildings that have often sat empty for years. This week, Gilbert added the old Grinnell and Sanders buildings to his portfolio, which now stands at more than 80 buildings he owns or controls.

A little further up Woodward, construction is moving along on the Ilitch family's crown jewel: a new home for the Detroit Red Wings, which will be known as Little Caesars Arena. The price tag is north of $627 million, with $250 million coming from bonds that are backed by taxpayer dollars. But amidst all of that is a persistent question: what about the neighborhoods?

Rev. Joan Ross joined Cynthia Canty on today’s Stateside to talk about Detroit's North End neighborhood. She is senior pastor for Salvation Temple Church North End and board chair for Storehouse of Hope.

Stateside is produced daily by a dedicated group of producers and production assistants. Listen daily, on-air, at 3 and 8 p.m., or subscribe to the daily podcast wherever you like to listen.
