The first day of classes begin at Ferris State University as hundreds of faculty plan to strike after negotiations failed to produce a new contract.

Hundreds of faculty at Ferris State University plan to strike today – the first day of classes – after negotiations failed to produce a new contract.

The contract with the union representing 450 tenured faculty members expired in June.

The Detroit News says the two sides have met 10 times, but couldn't agree on pay increases.

The strike does not include Ferris State's non-tenured faculty.

The university says classes will be held as scheduled.
