The Flint school board has decided it needs more time to pick its “preferred” candidate for the district’s soon-to-be vacant superintendent job.
The board heard from the two finalists for the position last night.
Bilal Kareem Tawwab is an assistant superintendent in the Detroit Public School district. Errick Greene is an executive with an education consulting businesses. Greene is also the son of one of Flint’s school board members.
The process of replacing outing interim superintendent Larry Watkins has moved quickly. So quickly in fact, the search firm hired to handle it has not received background checks on the candidates.
“We want to make sure we have all the information available when we make that decision,” says Board President Isaiah Oliver. “Right now, we don’t have background checks.”
The board is also discussing making site visits to see what the two finalists have been able to accomplish.
As of right now, the Flint school board is not scheduled to meet again until June 25.
Picking a finalist is not the end of the process.
The board and the candidate will still need to reach an agreement on a contract. If the district can't reach a deal with either candidate, the district may approach other applicants or reopen the national search.
