A new community center will soon open up inside a Detroit school.
The Ford Resource and Engagement Center is at Fisher Upper Magnet Academy, on the city’s east side.
The Ford Fund, the Ford Motor Company’s philanthropic arm, is sponsoring the $5 million project. It’s part of a $20 million commitment to community causes in Southeast Michigan.
“That’s a 70% increase from our annual amount five years ago,” said Ford Fund President Jim Vella.
The center is modeled on an existing community center in southwest Detroit. It will provide a range of basic services for the broader community, as well as special enrichment activities for students.
"It will be of enormous benefit to parents, to students, to families, to promote excellence in education,” said Steven Rhodes, transition manager for the Detroit Public Schools Community District.
The Center is scheduled to open in early 2017.
