Gov. Rick Snyder is making an endorsement in one of Michigan’s most divisive contests.
The governor endorsed Lt. Gov. Brian Calley in the Republican primary. But since the August primary, Snyder has refused to get involved in this year’s race for governor between Republican Bill Schuette and Democrat Gretchen Whitmer.
It’s a position he reaffirmed this week when asked if he was going to endorse or campaign for fellow Republican Bill Schuette in the final weeks of the campaign.
“That’s getting into politics…I’m sticking with governing,” Snyder told reporters.
But Snyder is weighing in on a possibly more politically sensitive issue. Namely, this weekend’s football game between Michigan State and his alma mater the University of Michigan.
“I’m term limited. I only got two or three more months left in office. I think I can get away with a 'Go Blue' today,” Snyder said with a laugh.
While football bragging rights in Michigan will be settled for the next year this weekend, voters will decide who will sit in the governor’s seat for the next four years next month.
Along with Schuette and Whitmer, Michigan voters have several candidates for governor to choose from, including Libertarian Party nominee Bill Gelineauand Green Party nominee Jennifer Kurland.
