Howell Schools plan end of pay-to-play policy

HOWELL, Mich. (AP) - A Michigan public school district plans to do away with fees parents pay to allow their children to participate in sports.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports Sunday that the elimination of pay-to-play fees is part of the Howell Public Schools proposed budget.

The school board is expected to approve the budget after a Monday evening public hearing.

A number of districts across the state have implemented pay-to-play policies as funding once used to buy equipment and pay for athletic programs has dried up.

Howell Public Schools generate $129,000 each year with the fees. The district is expected to have a fund balance this year.

Superintendent Ron Wilson says if the district can afford the fees "why should parents pay" them.
