The Howell-based activist group Citizens for Unity has organized a "March Against Fear" Saturday afternoon in response to flyers distributed by a white supremacist group.
The incident occurred during a fundraising event at the Howell Theater for girls in India. When attendees left the event, they found their cars covered with flyers produced by Patriot Front, a nationally recognized white supremacist organization.
The flyers have been described as racist. They claim that the United States has been "subverted and usurped," making references to reclaiming a "birthright" and the "blood and soil" phrase used in chants by neo-Nazi protesters in the Charlottesville Unite the Right rally last August.
Citizens for Unity is a group originally formed in response to the events in Charlottesville. Colleen Turk, one of the group's organizers, says the group was organized to promote diversity and communication between disparate political groups.
She says with the March for Fear event, the group hopes to show that the white supremacist flyers don't represent the views of the Howell community. "We've created our own flyer that we can pass out in the daytime, face to face with people, spreading a message that doesn't need to be hidden," says Turk.
The march will start at 2:30 pm at Howell Carnagie District Library.
