Investments in Greenville, Walker could bring 900 jobs

After years of struggling, the city of Greenville is getting a big economic boost.

The American subsidiary of a Chinese aluminum wheel manufacturer plans to invest $140 million in the West Michigan city.

The new plant will employ 300 people when it opens in 2016.

The company is taking over part of the old Electrolux plant, which closed in 2006, taking with it 2,700 jobs.

Greenville City Manager George Bosanic says this is something his community needed.

“Certainly, Greenville has had its history of ups and downs with the loss of Electrolux to Mexico, with UniSolar coming in and then going bankrupt,” says Bosanic. “We’re riding a little high now because this is a tremendous opportunity to get back on our feet with 300 more new jobs, potential for growth in the future, in what sounds like an amazing company.”

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation approved an incentive package for the company today.

A separate deal approved should bring about 600 jobs to the Grand Rapids suburb of Walker, where an Israeli company plans to consolidate its auto parts business.
