The son of former U.S. Rep. John Conyers is hoping to get his name on the 13th Congressional District ballot as an independent.

The Detroit News reports that John Conyers III is circulating petitions.

Candidates with no party affiliation have until July 19 to submit qualifying signatures to make the November ballot.

The Wayne County clerk recently ruled that Conyers III didn't have enough signatures to qualify for Democratic ballot in the August 7 primary. Courts have upheld her ruling.

More than a dozen candidates are running for the office.

It's vacant after the 89-year-old Rep. Conyers stepped down in December, citing health reasons, though several former female staffers had accused him of sexual harassment.
