Environmentalists raised their voices in song on Friday to express their disappointment in the Michigan Legislature this year.
The group that gathered to sing carols at the foot of the holiday tree outside the state Capitol on Friday were not the best singers. But with songs like “Smoggy the Coalman," the quality of their singing was obviously not the point.
The group of environmentalists accuse state lawmakers of hitting a few sour notes as well during the just completed legislative session.
Mary Brady-Enerson is with Michigan Clean Water Action. She says state lawmakers should have taken action toincrease the state’s renewable energy standard. Brady-Enerson says Michigan is set to reach the 10% standard next year.
She says their caroling protest is intended to “make sure that lawmakers know Michigan citizens support more investment in renewables and efficiency.”
Brady-Emerson hopes the Legislature will be more supportive of making Michigan’s air cleaner in the next legislative session beginning in January, but she’s concerned, because many returning state lawmakers scored low on her group’s legislative score cards on environmental issues.
