Two Lapeer County politicians have announced they want Todd Courser's state House seat.
Ian Kempf and Gary Howell say they will run for the Republican nomination, whether it's the 2016 election or a special election. Jake Davison announcedhe would be challenging Todd Courser before The Detroit Newsrevealed Courser was having an affair with fellow representative Cindy Gamrat and attempted to cover it up.
A House committeehas recently been formed to consider expelling the two representatives.
Kempf and Howell say it would be better for the community if Courser resigned.
"He should put an end to this embarrassment for his family and the community, resign immediately," Howell said. "But I have no illusions he is going to do that."
Howell is a retired township attorney, president of the Lapeer Intermediate School District board, and a member of the Lapeer County Road Commission.
Kempf lives in Imlay City, and has been a county commissioner since 2000. He is also a manager of the Eastern Michigan State Fair.
Kempf says he knows the Courser family and feels terrible for what they are going through.
"But the bottom line is the citizens of Lapeer County need to come first," Kempf said.
Both men say they considered running for the position before the Courser controversy.
