The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative's funding would be cut by 90 percent under President Trump's new budget proposal.

President Donald Trump's new budget proposal would cut 90 percent of the funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The program helps clean up the lakes and protect them against invasive species.

The administration tried to slash the Initiative's budget last year and there was strong push back.

Michigan Radio's "Morning Edition" host Doug Tribou and senior news analyst Jack Lessenberry discuss the president's decision to try again.

They also talk about how the Michigan State University Faculty Senate passed a vote of no confidence in the schools’ Board of Trustees yesterday, Lansing's accidental lapse of local ordinances, and the death of Art Van furniture founder Archie Van Elslander.

Doug Tribou joined the Michigan Public staff as the host of Morning Edition in 2016. Doug first moved to Michigan in 2015 when he was awarded a Knight-Wallace journalism fellowship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
