Starting on New Year's Day, Michigan workers making the minimum wage will see a 35 cent hourly raise from $8.15 to $8.50 per hour.
For people working full time, that's $14 more per week and $728 more per year.
Under a 2014 law, Michigan is boosting its hourly minimum wage in steps to $9.25 in 2018.
Beginning in 2019, it will go up with inflation every year unless unemployment is high.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Michigan's wage will be tied for 14th highest among the 45 states with a minimum wage, and Michigan joins thirteen other states raising their minimum wages in the new year.
