New campaign warns against buying alcohol for minors

DETROIT (AP) - Secretary of State Ruth Johnson and other Michigan officials are warning of the consequences of buying alcohol for minors.

The "21 to Buy, Not Supply" marketing campaign, which targets college students, was launched this week at an event at Wayne State University in Detroit.

Johnson says "there is too much risk" for people who turn 21 and are asked to buy alcohol for their friends.

Providing alcohol to a minor can bring a $1,000 fine, up to 90 days in jail and legal fees of $5,000 or more. The coalition says other consequences can include lost wages, forfeited scholarships and even expulsion from college.

The marketing campaign will last for a year and be visible at Secretary of State offices, grocery stores and other places.
