In "Overnight" exhibit, artist spotlights darkness

To many of us, darkness and light are just something you affect by flicking a light switch or snuffing a candle.

But for University of Michigan architecture assistant Catie Newell, light is a condition and a "material."

Her fascination with light is matched only by her interest in darkness.

That will be evident in her upcoming exhibition, "Overnight."

It opens June 11 and runs until November 6 at the Irving Stenn, Jr. Family Gallery in the U of M Museum of Art.

Here is "Second Story," which was an installation at the Extension  Gallery.

GUEST Catie Newell is Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan and the founding principal of the art and architecture practice *Alibi Studio.

Stateside is produced daily by a dedicated group of producers and production assistants. Listen daily, on-air, at 3 and 8 p.m., or subscribe to the daily podcast wherever you like to listen.
