A new poll shows growing support in Michigan for reducing or eliminating penalties for small amounts of marijuana.
The poll by Marketing Resource Group and Mitchell Research found 41% of Michiganders support legalization, regulation and taxation of small amounts of marijuana. 24% of those polled say possession of small amounts of marijuana should be treated like a speeding ticket.
The poll numbers broke down along ideological lines. Nearly 60% of self-described Liberals favor legalization of marijuana, while 70% of self-described Conservatives say marijuana possession should be treated as a crime, with jail time or at least a ticket being issued. 23% of Conservatives say they support legalizing, regulating and taxing marijuana in Michigan.
The poll of 600 likely voters was conducted Oct. 6th through the 10th.
Next month, voters in Lansing and Jackson will consider ballot issues to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana.
Similar ballot questions have already passed in Detroit, Flint and Grand Rapids.
