The U.S. General Services Administration is looking for stewards to take care of three historic lighthouses in Michigan.
Stewards can use the lighthouses for educational, cultural or preservation purposes in exchange for maintaining them.
Cat Langel, GSA spokeswoman, said stewards are typically state or local governments, non-profits, or historic preservation groups.
"We know that lighthouses have a very sentimental value to the community," she said. "A lot of groups do step forward to make sure that a piece of their local history and their local culture is maintained."
Langel says 25 other lighthouses in Michigan have been transferred or sold under the National Lighthouse Preservation Act.
The Detroit River Light, Minneapolis Shoal Light and North Manitou Shoal Light are all currently available for stewardship.
