Shelters trying to make Christmas bright for people without heat

Several hundred people across the state may be spending Christmas in an emergency shelter, after a severe ice storm on Saturday.

Dick Beauchamp is with the Red Cross in Genessee County.

The agency turned the second floor of its Flint office into a shelter.

About 50 people were there as of Tuesday morning.

Beauchamp said he expects more to show up.

He figures, "People have hung out at home as long as they can, and now the houses are getting pretty cold, and so we're having more people call in and more people coming in right and left."

Beauchamp says they're running out of blankets, pillows,  toilet paper, and paper towels.

But lots of people and groups have been helping out.

He says Family Video donated Christmas hams, and State Representative Jim Ananich came by and then called Mott College, which loaned a bus to pick people up who couldn't get to the shelter on their own.

The United Way is donating money, and the Salvation Army sent over some of its blankets and pillows.

And a local union may get "Santa Claus" to visit kids in the shelter on Christmas Day.
