Silent ride will call for better protection of Michigan bicyclists

Hundreds of cyclists are expected to silently ride to the state Capitol in Lansing Sunday afternoon.

The event is part memorial for a woman cyclist struck and killed by a car last month and part protest for stronger laws to protect people riding bicycles.

Mike Unsworth is with the Tri-County Bicycle Association.

He says Michigan can do a better job of protecting bicycle riders by taking better care of state roads.

“What we’re trying to do in the long term is make sure when road construction does happen is that bicycle and pedestrian-friendly features are incorporated in the design,” says Unsworth.

There are several bills in the Legislature to toughen penalties in accidents involving bicycles and to include bicycle safety in driver education materials.
