Special meeting on Flint water woes is a bust

Flint city staff snubbed city council members who wanted to hold a special meeting tonight on the city’s drinking water problems.

No city staffer showed up at the special meeting. City Administrator Natasha Henderson had objections to elements of the planned meeting.

Councilman Eric Mays has been pushing for an “investigative” meeting on Flint’s water issues from months. He says the city staff snub was “disrespectful.”

“You know, they’ve got so much staff, somebody could have been here,” Mays said after the meeting.

It wasn’t just city staff. Several city council members also skipped the meeting. And after starting the meeting with a slim quorum, several more members, including Council President Josh Freeman, walked out.

Freeman complains the meeting was a “waste of time” and says he doesn’t blame City Administrator Natasha Henderson for being a no-show.

“Quite frankly, I don’t blame her for not bringing staff up here,” Freeman said.

Freeman says the council needs to work with the city administrator to address the city’s water issues.
