Shelby Township Clerk Stanley Grot withdrew from the race for Secretary of State, citing family obligations and the "overall political atmosphere." In Michigan, candidates for Secretary of State are chosen at the party conventions.

The Democratic and Republican conventions are held Aug. 25-26. The remaining Republican candidates are Mary Treder Lang and Joseph Guzman. Grot says he will support whichever candidate wins the nomination.

In the fall election, the new Republican nominee will face Democratic candidate, which is currently presumed to be Jocelyn Benson.
