State law enforcement and health officials will hold a summit on heroinaddiction in Michigan Monday.
Heroin use has grown because of demand created by prescription drug abuse and cheap heroin coming across the border with Mexico.
“(Prescription drug abuse) leads to greater heroin abuse because people want to continue that high,” says Lt. Joseph Thomas, Michigan State Police post commander in Lansing.
Thomas says high school students are becoming heroin users in larger numbers.
“It has gotten to the high school students, so we have very young people getting involved in heroin use,” says Thomas.
More than 400 people are expected to attend Monday’s summit.
The heroin summit is being sponsored by the Michigan State Police, the Michigan Department of Education and the Department of Community Health.
