Troy Mayor Janice Daniels faced a packed and angry house at a City Council meeting Monday night.

Residents and non-residents alike lined up to blast Daniels, who’s come under fire for an anti-gay slur she made on Facebook. A Troy blog unearthed the remark from earlier this year.

It read: “I think I am going to throw away my I love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there.”

Dozens of people—some wearing “I love New York” shirts and stickers—lined up to berate Daniels.

Students from Troy High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance organized a protest before the meeting, and several spoke during it. One was senior Zack Kilgore.

“I think what you’ve seen tonight is the real Troy," Kilgore said. "With everyone coming out in support of each other...I think that’s really what Troy is. We’re a really diverse, accepting community. And Mayor Daniels does not represent us.”

Kilgore and many others called on Daniels to resign.

Daniels has apologized, saying she exercised poor judgment for using the word “queers.” But she has defended her stance against gay marriage.
