The Troy Police Department may have a police cat come April.

Stateside host Cynthia Canty was scrolling through her Twitter feed when a tweet jumped out at her. It had a photo of a big orange tabby cat wearing a Smokey-the-Bear-style police hat and some traffic-cop-style mirrored sunglasses.

Turns out, the tweet belonged to the Troy Police Department. It said if 10,000 people follow the department's account by April, the officers could get a police cat.

Stateside spoke with Sergeant Meghan Lehman today to find out what’s behind the Troy Police Department’s quest for a police cat. Listen above to hear whether Lehman thinks a cat could help fight crime and why she hopes the effort will bring the department closer to the community.
