Report: State took $4.5 billion from K-12 funds to plug budget holes

 

It was supposed to be paid back. The bill included language requiring funds to be repaid to the School Aid Fund to the General Fund between fiscal years 2011/12 and 2015/16. But the legislature never paid it back.

Kalamazoo Public Schools wants every student to see someone who looks like them in a book. That's why it's adding books to school classrooms to reflect the diversity of its student body.

 

Grand Rapids school shows what the new third grade reading requirements looks like

 

Tracy Carpenter, a first grade teacher at Stocking Elementary, doesn’t like that this law calls for retaining kids.

 

“One of the most devastating things, I think, that can happen to a child is being retained,” Carpenter said.

 

University of Michigan reports jump in sexual misconduct complaints against faculty, staff

 

The report attributes that spike to “the University community’s continued awareness of these issues and how to report concerns, as well as an increased societal awareness of sexual misconduct, such as through the #MeToo movement.”
