Some Parchment residents might be using bottled water for longer than they had hoped. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality found high levels of PFAS in private wells near Kalamazoo.

More than 110 private wells have been tested, and results are in for about 102 of them. A DEQ spokesperson says the results range from non-detection to 340 parts per trillion – or almost five times the EPA advisory level, which is 70 ppt.

Kalamazoo city water could be the best temporary solution to ongoing groundwater contamination in nearby Parchment.

The state found chemicals known as PFAS at high levels in Parchment city water late last week. It declared a state of emergency, and free cases of bottled water were made available for residents.

Parts of Cooper Township were also affected.

PFAS compounds are often used in firefighting foam and waterproofing materials. Some of the chemicals have been linked to thyroid and kidney disease.

Michigan officials say state agencies will be providing additional help for two communities near Kalamazoo dealing with chemical contamination of the public water system.

The governor's office said Sunday that a state of emergency has been declared for Kalamazoo County over the health concerns in Parchment and Cooper Township, where water test results announced Thursday revealed high levels of substances known as PFAS.

Replacement absentee ballots were sent out to hundreds of voters in Kalamazoo County this week after a mistake was discovered on the original forms.

MLive reported that ballots sent to voters in four Schoolcraft Township precincts and one Portage precinct listed candidates running for Michigan’s 63rd House of Representatives district race instead of the 61st district.

A report being released Monday is expected to blame the road, at least in part, for a massive chain reaction crash on Interstate 94 in January.

One person was killed in the 197 vehicle crash along I-94 near Kalamazoo. The interstate was closed for days as burned and damaged vehicles had to be detangled and towed away.

GALESBURG, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say all lanes have reopened on Interstate 94 in southwestern Michigan two days after the 193-vehicle pileup on the snowy highway.

State transportation officials say the eastbound lanes reopened Sunday morning, a few hours after those on the westbound side.

Efforts to reopen the highway stalled Saturday as crews tried to remove acid from a tanker truck.

Jeff Titus is currently serving two life sentences for a double homicide in 1990.

Two men believe Titus’ alibi that he was hunting in a different part of the state at the time the shootings took place.     The two men are the original detectives who investigated the crime.

On November 17th, 1990, Doug Estes and Jim Bennett were hunting in the Fulton State Gaming Area.  Both were shot in the back at close range.

The shooting occurred near the property of Jeff Edward Titus.

A handful of Michigan county health department leaders say “health” should play a bigger role in local decision making.

Health department officials from Wayne, Genesee, Ingham, Kent, Kalamazoo, Saginaw and Washtenaw counties met in Lansing this past week to strategize how to change the way local governments do pretty much everything.

Linda Vail is Ingham County’s Chief Health Officer.   She says city and county leaders often fail to consider the potential effects their decisions will have on their community’s health.

PORTER, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say the body of a woman has been found in a northwestern Indiana lake near where they conducted a January search for a missing Michigan doctor.

Indiana State Police say a fisherman on Lake Charles in the town of Porter reported something suspicious Sunday morning. They say divers helped recover a female body dressed in dark clothing.

Police say an autopsy will be conducted this week to positively identify the body.

The search for a missing Kalamazoo medical student is generating few clues nearly two months after she disappeared.

Teleka Patrick was last seen December 5, 2013.  Her car was found by the side of the road in northern Indiana in early December.

News stories about Patrick’s “erratic behavior,” including a personal protection order to keep her away from a popular Grand Rapids pastor, have drawn national attention.
