A federal judge dismissed a case last week about Michigan's practice of drawing infants' blood without parental consent. Parents are generally not told that their child's blood is being drawn until after it's already happened.

The Michigan Supreme Court is considering whether it's appropriate for a judge to see the conditions of a home before terminating someone's parental rights.

The court on Thursday told lawyers for an Otsego County couple and the state of Michigan to file briefs on that issue as well as others. The court will hear arguments in the months ahead.

Gov. Rick Snyder will consider changing the rules that allow courts to permanently remove children from their parents.

The bills are on their way to the governor’s desk. One would prevent the state from automatically asking that a parent’s rights be terminated just because they had their rights terminated to other children.

“It absolutely is a due process issue," said Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge, a bill sponsor. "And it’s a protection of the poor.”

The Michigan Supreme Court this week handed a big win to parents with disabilities in child welfare cases.

If the state removes a child from her home and puts her in foster care, generally the goal is to reunite the child and parent as soon as possible. The parent is given services and a plan with specific goals they have to meet before reunification, and if those goals aren't met, their parental rights can be terminated.

A new law would protect rape victims from a custody battle with their rapists when a child is conceived.

The Michigan Senate unanimously passed legislation this week that would allow courts to terminate a rapist's parental rights to a child conceived by the rape of the mother.

Senate Bill 629 was introduced by Republican Sen. Rick Jones earlier this month.

The Michigan Supreme Court will consider a case tomorrow involving a grandparent’s right to have visitation with a grandchild.

In the case, the parents of a man whose parental rights to his two children were terminated sued for visitation. The man’s parental rights were terminated following allegations of physical abuse. He has since died.

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) - A man seeking custody of a child born to a married woman has lost at the Michigan appeals court in a case linked to a new law that's intended to give men more rights.

The court says Aaron Grimes still can't intervene because he knew that Shawnita Van Hook-Williams was married during their affair. Michigan recognizes a woman's husband as the legal parent even if he's not the biological father.
