Thetford Township officials have put their recently arrested police chief on administrative leave without pay.

Police Chief Robert Kenny was charged this week with embezzlement and obstruction of justice. He allegedly pocketed money as part of a scheme involving military surplus equipment. Kenny faces up to five years in prison on both counts if convicted.

Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell was sued this week under the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, known as RICO.  The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday in U.S District Court in Detroit.

The complaint alleges Pickell demanded money for himself and his re-election campaign committee in exchange for deputizing agents to act as process servers.

The suit claims the pattern of extortion went on for ten years.

Governor Snyder met privately with Flint and Genesee County leaders today, hours after asking the Obama administration for help in dealing with the city’s water crisis.

“We’re finally getting the attention that we need and deserve,” said Flint Mayor Karen Weaver in a written statement. “For so long, our voices have gone unheard. This man-made water disaster has been devastating and frustrating for the residents of Flint. We can’t fix what’s happened to the people of Flint. But, we can get them the things they deserve as a result of it.”

Officials are now going door to door in Flint handing out water filters.

Genesee County reserve sheriff’s deputies started knocking on doors just after 10 am in a neighborhood on the city’s north side.  If someone answers, deputies  hand out bottled water and filters to homeowners who need them.

While thousands of water filters have been handed out, many people in Flint are still not using them to filter lead from their drinking water.

Sheriff Robert Pickell says the homes in this neighborhood are some of the oldest in town, with some dating back to 1900.
