Story ideas gathered at Michigan Radio's 'Open Newsroom' event

Normally we have a news meeting every weekday morning here in the office.

But this time, we decided to fan out around the state to, as Amy Witzke put it on Facebook, put the 'public' in 'public radio.'

Our goal was to hear what you had to say about the stories that are important to you and your communities.

For those folks who couldn't meet up with one of our reporters at a Biggby Coffee location, we chatted them up on Facebook and Twitter.

In Grand Rapids, our News Director Vincent Duffy heard from a lot of people who wanted more coverage on health care issues.

In Birmingham, reporter Kate Wells heard a plea for more coverage on how changes to CAFE standards will effect road funding.

Detroit Reporter Sarah Cwiek said she loved "meeting other people with a geeky passion for Detroit."

In Jackson, Kyle Norris and Steve Carmody were asked to cover job prospects for high school graduates. A high school degree used to be enough to find a good job in Michigan, now what options are there for high school graduates?

And in Lansing, Zoe Clark, Cyndy Canty, and Lester Graham heard pleas for more... surprise!... political coverage.

On Twitter and on Facebook we heard a lot of good ideas, including more coverage on how autism is affecting families today, how to help returning war veterans, more stories on worker training, stories on the changing media landscape, and stories on Michigan's grape crop (one that weathered the bizarre spring thaw and frost).

There were many more ideas shared, and we appreciate you reaching out to connect with us.

It's refreshing to go out and meet the people who are passionate about what we do. Now you've given us a lot to chew on, and we'll be sure to step to it.
