Help Michigan Radio produce a podcast for the residents of Morningside
Michigan Radio is launching an innovative local project to give voice to residents of Detroit’s MorningSide neighborhood, as part of the station’s continued participation in the Detroit Journalism Cooperative. For the past year, Michigan Radio and the Detroit Journalism Cooperative have been concentrating on the Morningside neighborhood, looking at the challenges, successes, and hopes of people in that neighborhood.
The MorningSide podcast project aims to teach community members how to use audio equipment to record their neighbors, friends, coworkers, or family members for a podcast that can be downloaded and shared. We are looking for MorningSide residents to share unique and essential stories about their community. Michigan Radio will help with the production and distribution of the podcasts, which residents will be able to listen to or download on computers, tablets or their smart phones.
Detroit-based writer Imani Mixon is spearheading the project. A native eastsider, Imani lived in MorningSide for several years growing up. After studying journalism at Northwestern University, she’s returned to her hometown to document Detroit’s history and resurgence, with a particular focus on neighborhood change.
Imani will spend the year working with interested community members to train them in making a community podcast that will be accessible to, and created for, their MorningSide neighbors.
Whether you want to tell a story, conduct an interview, or just want to learn more about making a podcast, this is an open invitation for MorningSide residents to get involved. Email Imani at firstname.lastname@example.org, call 313-640-2908 or schedule a visit to our MorningSide office on East Warren Ave. Let’s figure out how we can work together.
Funding for the project is provided by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
