Winning Super Bowl TV commercial picked by Michigan State University professors

Budweiser
MSU professors thought this Budweiser ad was the clear winner last night

The Seattle Seahawks trounced the Denver Broncos in Sunday’s Super Bowl.

But a group of Michigan State University advertising and public relations professors says the real winners were a dog and horse.

Companies paid about $4 million for each 30-second spot during the big game in hopes of reaching 100 million viewers.

For 17 years, MSU professors have been picking the big game’s best TV ads. Last night, their pick for the best commercial was a Budweiser ad featuring a puppy and Clydesdale horse that develop a special relationship.

Here is the MSU Super Bowl commercial top ten list:

  1. Budweiser, that featured a puppy and a horse develop a special relationship
  2. Doritos, in which a young cowboy riding a dog like a horse.
  3. Volkswagen, in which engineers earned their wings.
  4. Microsoft, that featured life-changing technology.
  5. Heinz ketchup, in which people sang “If you’re happy and you know it.”
  6. Kia that featured a “Matrix” theme.
  7. Budweiser, featuring a returning-home soldier.
  8. Coca Cola, in which “America the Beautiful” is sung in different languages.
  9. M&Ms, in which an unsuspecting piece of candy is in a car trunk.
  10. Dannon yogurt featuring a reunion of the stars from “Full House.”

Pollsters find about a third of Super Bowl TV viewers think the commercials are more interesting than the game itself. That’s probably even truer when it’s a blow out like last night’s game.
