Survey points to up year for Michigan construction industry
Michigan contractors expect to hire more workers in 2019.
A survey by the Associated General Contractors of America finds three quarters of Michigan construction contractors expect to hire more workers.
Ken Simonson, the chief economist for the group, says there is still a shortage of skilled labor in construction trades.
“In the last few years, construction hiring has increased faster than the overall economy,” says Simonson, “but total employment in construction is still about 5% below the peak that was set way back in 2006.”
Simonson says Michigan contractors are optimistic about 2019, despite concerns about a possible recession and auto industry cuts.
