An appeals court on Wednesday upheld Governor Whitmer's order that keeps gyms and fitness centers closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

While bars and restaurants are navigating the first couple weeks of reopening, there’s another group of businesses that is still waiting on the okay to resume in-person operations: gyms and fitness centers. Governor Gretchen Whitmer was recently sued by an industry group, the League of Independent Fitness Facilities and Trainers Inc., over her order that keeps gyms and fitness centers closed to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

A federal judge had initially ruled that the state had not presented enough evidence to show that opening gyms and fitness centers would be unsafe. But an appeals court late Wednesday upheld the governor's order. As gym owners watch and wait to see what's next, Stateside checked back in with Mark Thiesmeyer Hook, owner of Better Living Fitness in Ann Arbor, to hear what's on his mind when it comes to reopening.
