If you're planning to buy some big-ticket items this holiday season, you may want to check your insurance policy first.

Shoppers aren't the only ones who will be out in droves over the next month: It's peak season for thieves who target cars and homes.

Jason Moon is with Michigan's Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation.

He says you may need additional coverage and an updated inventory of valuable items, like electronics or jewelry. Moon says the National Association of Insurance Commissioners offers a free smart phone app to help with that.

"That makes it easy to document possessions, update your inventory and store information," Moon says. "You can scan bar codes, take pictures and video and put it all in one place. That will make it easier and faster in the event you have to file a claim."

Moon also reminds shoppers that extended warranties offered by retailers are not the same as insurance. He says you should check with your insurance agent to make sure your purchases are covered in case of damage or theft.

To download the free smartphone application to document your possessions and update home inventories, go to the iTunes or Android Market app stores and search "NAIC."
