About  45 people, including young children, are scrambling to find shelter today after being evicted from the Avalon Hotel in Blackman Township near Jackson

Some say they can live temporarily with family during the holidays, but others had no place to go.

"There are a lot of people moving stuff," says Katie Anderson, assistant manager of the Interfaith Shelter of Jackson. "There are U-Hauls backed up to rooms. It's a lot of craziness, there's a lot of tears. A lot of people are a little lost and confused about what to do."

"It's my understanding that the hotel switched management, and the building is being torn down," Anderson says.  Michigan Radio could not reach the hotel owners to confirm why the residents were evicted.

Anderson says everyone was asked to leave, including people who worked at the hotel.

"And they found out within a 24-hour notice -- so basically no notice at all," she says.

The Interfaith Shelter provides emergency housing and meals for up to 90 days at no charge.

"We're pretty much at capacity already," Anderson says. "Nobody really wants to move into homeless shelters, so aside from  the time of year, it's just tragic."
