The Michigan Board of Education is launching the search for a new state School Superintendent of Public Instruction.

The board has hired the executive search firm Ray & Associates to conduct the search.

The job of Michigan’s top educator has been in limbo since the death last Spring of former state school superintendent Brian Whiston.

Chief Deputy Superintendent Sheila Alles was appointed Interim State Superintendent by the State Board. She has been running the day-to-day management of the state Education Department since Whiston’s death in May.

The Board of Education will be accepting applications for the superintendent’s job until March 11th.

The Board of Ed will hire the new superintendent.  In November, Democrats won a six to two majority on the Board.
