Winter's blast delaying flights, causing accidents in southern Michigan

Steve Carmody/Michigan Radio

UPDATE 5:30pm

ROMULUS, Mich. (AP) - A heavy snowfall and winter storm conditions around the region have affected at least 189 flights at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and forcing the cancellation of at least 15.

The fringe of a winter storm centered farther south in Ohio is expected to dump four to seven inches of snow on the region by Thursday morning, and the National Weather Service reports 3.8 inches was already on the ground at the airport in Romulus on Wednesday afternoon.

Detroit Metro says typical flights were facing delays of 16 to 30 minutes by early evening.

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) - Rock salt and scrapers are flying off store shelves as southeastern Michigan residents brace for the first major snowstorm of the season.

The National Weather Service says a winter storm is expected to dump four to seven inches of snow on the region between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The heaviest accumulations are likely along Lake St. Clair.

Snow was falling across southeastern Michigan at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with winds gusting to 30 mph and temperatures just below freezing.

Richard Pollman is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.  He says this is a classic winter storm that developed over the Gulf Coast.

"That snow area has moved up into Indiana and Ohio this morning, and will move into southeast Michigan this afternoon,” says Pollman.

Pollman says after tonight's storm, he expects little snowfall through the end of the year.

At an Aco Hardware store in Southfield, assistant manager Chris Mokrzycki says the usual day-after-Christmas gift-exchange rush has been replaced by people stocking up for the storm.

The Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula got up to 20 inches of snow in a storm that hit last Thursday.
