Turning alcohol into water in Flint

Steve Carmody
Michigan Radio

The White Horse Tavern is turning alcohol into water these days.  All to help the Flint school district.

White Horse tavern owner Chris Poulos offered me a free drink as I sidled up to the bar.

He’s offering a shot or a beer to anyone dropping by his downtown bar during happy hour these days, as long as they, like me, hand over a case of bottled water.

High lead levels in Flint water have city school officials asking for bottled water donations. The donations have been coming in by the single case and by the truckload.

Sitting at the bar, I watched as person after person walked into the bar carrying a case of bottled water under their arm.

"This gentlemen who’s just left, he brought four cases of water in … with two kids," Poulos smiles, "so I gave them a glass of juice … then I gave him a couple of beers to go.”

Poulos hopes to deliver 50 cases of water to a Flint school on Monday.
