Home Sweet Pickle Barrel: 20th century cartoonist’s home still draws a crowd

If you're heading to the Upper Peninsula for a vacation this summer, you might choose to stay in a hotel. Maybe you'll camp out in a tent or camper.

Or maybe, if you're like 20th century cartoonist William Donahey, you'll stay in a pickle barrel.

Near the shore of Lake Superior in Grand Marais sits a little barrel-shaped cottage. This very unique little place was once a summer retreat for the cartoonist and author of children's books.

Cathy Egerer? from the Grand Marais Historical Society joined us today to talk a bit about the pickle barrel cottage and the man for whom it was built.

GUEST Cathy Egerer is Treasurer and Archivist for the Grand Marais Historical Society.

Stateside is produced daily by a dedicated group of producers and production assistants. Listen daily, on-air, at 3 and 9 p.m., or subscribe to the daily podcast wherever you like to listen.
