DETROIT (AP) - Thieves struck a Detroit church and swiped a brass bell that's more than 100 years old.

The bell belongs to Sweetest Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church. Officials believe a lock was cut on a fence that surrounds the church grounds Thursday night or early Friday morning.

The bell was displayed in a brick-and-concrete platform. It's been at Sweetest Heart of Mary since 2005 after decades at two other churches that closed. Maintenance director Dennis Felcyn tells the Detroit Free Press that someone may have purchased the bell for $850 outside an antique shop in Algonac.

Police are investigating.
