State Senator Mike Kowall plans to introduce legislation called "Uniformed Lives Matter."

The bills make it a hate crime to assault someone in law enforcement.

It's Kowal's response to the murders of Dallas police officers last week.

Kowall says he doesn't intend to upset people in the "Black Lives Matter" movement.

"No, I don't think it's going to be gasoline on the fire," says Kowall. "We're not trying to cause any problems or anything like that. What we're trying to do is emphasize that just because you have a uniform on doesn't mean you're not a human being."

Kowall says it is already a hate crime to assault someone because of their race.
