The University of Michigan is building a new $10 million diversity center – something the Black Student Union demanded in 2014.

When the #BBUM campaign went viral that year, one of the demands was to replace the current Trotter Multicultural Center with a new building on central campus.

For years, some students said the Trotter Center is too far from the main campus, and doesn’t get the kind of attention and resources it deserves – an added sting on campus where just four percent of the student body is black, and black professors are just three percent of the full-time faculty.

Administrators say the new building will be near the heart of campus, along South State Street. At 20,000 square feet, the new center will be nearly twice as large as the Trotter building.

The Board of Regents approved the plans Tuesday.
